1910, Loos, villa Steiner

In his lecture Ornament und Verbrechen of 1908, Adolf Loos insisted that it is a crime to make craftsmen waste their time on ornaments, which will be dated after just a few years anyway. He applied this theory in the Steiner house of 1910. All façades are plastered white and the windows are of different sizes. With Loos they always have the right dimensions to let in sufficient light and to provide a view to the outside. Loos would continue to oppose the large windows such as those of the Bauhaus. The rear façade became iconic for the modern movement due to its simplicity. Loos had a great interest in English architecture and this is visible in the interior. Nowhere are there ornaments, yet everything is richly appointed with visible beams on the ceilings, wooden panelling up to door height, a built-in seating area and fixed cupboards.
