WORKERS’ HOUSING 1850-1922

Two chapters, beluiken and the charity office of Antwerp (Bureau van Weldadigheid van Antwerpen), can be accessed via the arrows in the left-hand column.
A third chapter deals primarily with initiatives in the Netherlands from 1910 onwards, as described in the book Tuinsteden (Garden Cities) by G. Feenstra, published in 1920. Below is the garden village of Heijplaat in Rotterdam.

.

We will also discuss initiatives in Belgium from 1920 onwards, namely the establishment of the National Society for Affordable Housing and Living Quarters (Nationale Maatschappij voor Goedkope Woningen en  Woonvertrekken), as reported in the magazines La Cité, L’Habitation à Bon Marché and Bouwgids.
